I designed a digital zine to translate a dense 3-year strategy into an engaging, accessible narrative for diverse stakeholders.
The Challenge
Strategic plans are often long, dense, skimmed (not read). Digital NEST stakeholders had different levels of familiarity with the organization as well as different movtivations ie., funding, impact, accountability.
So…
How might I communicate long-term strategy in a way that is engaging, scannable, and emotionally resonant - without losing rigor?
Audience & Stakeholder Considerations
Given the strategic and stakeholder-facing nature of the report, audience needs were inferred from the organization’s mission, typical funder expectations, and the context in which the report would be shared.
Content Synthesis & Information Design
The content for Digital NEST’s 3-year strategic plan was provided by the Operations Manager as written documentation outlining organizational history, impact metrics, program models, and future goals.
Much of this information was dense and text-heavy, making it difficult for stakeholders to quickly understand relationships, priorities, and outcomes.
My role was to synthesize this raw content and translate it into clear visual systems — including infographics, diagrams, and modular layouts — that communicated strategy and impact at a glance. Rather than simply laying out content, I focused on reducing cognitive load and emphasizing meaning through visual hierarchy, structure, and repetition.
Design Decisions
Identified key metrics and surfaced them as visual callouts
Translated long-form descriptions into diagrams and infographics
Grouped related initiatives to show relationships and strategic alignment
Used consistent layout patterns to support scanning and skim-reading
Infographics and diagrams were designed directly within full-page layouts to ensure they functioned cohesively within the overall narrative of the report.
Visual Design System & Brand Alignment
The visual design system was developed in alignment with Digital NEST’s existing brand identity, ensuring the strategic plan felt cohesive with the organization’s broader visual language while adapting it for a long-form, editorial format.
Because the report would be shared with external stakeholders, funders, and partners, it was important that the design reinforced Digital NEST’s credibility, creativity, and community-focused mission without introducing unnecessary visual complexity.
I translated Digital NEST’s brand foundations — including color, typography, and tone — into a scalable design system that supported clarity, consistency, and narrative flow across the entire zine.
This page demonstrates the use of color, typography, diagrams, and watermark logo for a cohesive visual identity
Outcome & Impact
The zine had a significant impact on Digital NEST’s stakeholders by transforming a complex strategic plan into a visually engaging, approachable, and compelling artifact:
Communicated Mission & Vision: The visually rich design helped stakeholders clearly understand the organization’s priorities and growth plans for the next three years.
Enhanced Stakeholder Engagement: Staff and partners reported that the zine made strategic goals more approachable, inspiring confidence in the plan.
Reference Artifact: The design became a model for future internal and external communications, showing how data and narrative can be combined visually.
Reflection & What This Shows About Me
This project highlights my ability to translate strategy into visual storytelling:
Strategic Thinking: Turning an organizational roadmap into a clear visual narrative.
Editorial UX & Visual Storytelling: Designing content-heavy pages that balance hierarchy, readability, and engagement.
Designing for Stakeholders / Non-Traditional Users: Making internal strategic information approachable, engaging, and shareable.
Balancing Narrative + Design: Ensuring visual appeal while clearly communicating complex information.
